“Positive” and “predictable” are the two objectives most sought after in clinical care. Endodontics and its often-varied pre-operative and post-operative clinical presentations can make those objectives elusive while, at the same time, creating stress in the doctor-patient relationship. This lecture aims to identify and outline several of the most common troublesome endodontic patient presentations. The entire patient-facing dental team (including administrative staff) should have a solid understanding of these presentations and how best to address them. Topics will include persistent pain, cracked tooth syndrome, cervical invasive root resorption, endo vs. perio pathology, guarded long/short-term prognosis, and more. Though scientific evidence and studies form the foundation of our discussion, the emphasis of this lecture will be on providing patient- and staff-friendly, understandable protocols, to improve patient education and create predictable and positive interactions for doctor and patient alike.

Learning Objectives:
Quickly identify patient presentations that can lead to less-than-ideal outcomes.
Understand the basic biology behind most endodontic “problems”, including CTS, VRF, CIRR, endo vs. perio pathology, nonodontogenic pain, etc.
Formulate and implement a practical approach for handling these presentations and, most importantly, creating a positive experience for the human being in your chair.
