Dr. Ganesan is board-certified in Periodontics and Dental Implant Surgery and serves as Centennial Associate Professor and Director of the Residency Program in Periodontics at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. He earned his PhD and certificate in Periodontics from The Ohio State University and an MPH in Health Policy and Administration from the University of Illinois, Chicago. Before joining Iowa, he completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda. A Fellow of the International and American Colleges of Dentists and the ADEA Leadership Institute, Dr. Ganesan is also a member of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honor Society. He has received multiple awards from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) and the AAP Foundation and serves on committees for the AAP, AADOCR, and the Midwest Society of Periodontology. In addition to providing advanced periodontal and implant care, including moderate conscious sedation, Dr. Ganesan is dedicated to teaching residents and leading a funded research program. His research examines the links between the microbiome, oral health, and systemic disease, with a focus on host-microbial interactions in obesity, metabolic syndrome, and peri-implantitis. Dr. Ganesan's research program has been continuously funded since its inception, with support from the Osteology Foundation, the Diabetes Research Center, the American Cancer Society (Young Investigator Grant), Colgate-Palmolive, Sanofi, the Carver Foundation, and the NIH/NIDCR R03,and an active R01. Dr. Ganesan champions a holistic approach to healthcare, integrating clinical care, research, and public health expertise.
